The Aughts Project

What is the Aughts Project you ask?  Well, it all started at the end of last year when everyone and their mother started putting out “Best of the Decade” lists for everything from magazines to reality TV stars to eating trends.  Of course, I decided I would put together a top-50 list of my own and throw it out into the ether. But, as much as I like to pretend that my opinions are correct (and that anyone gives a damn what I think), I was curious about what my friends, family, and co-workers considered to be the cream of the Aughts.  So, the call went out from Coast to Coast and 13 stalwart film lovers responded. Their lists were entered into the secret Paulies database and scored using the methodology described below.

The voters had diverse tastes (to say the least).   Every genre from horror to romantic comedy to little seen art house fare had its supporters and over 300 different movies were listed across the 14 ballots. Only one movie (City of God) was listed as the top film of the decade on two different ballots.  The films that ranked 10th through 50th are listed below.  The numbers in brackets are the total points followed by the number of ballots the movie appeared on (e.g. [40 – 3]  means the movie received 40 total points and was included on 3 different ballots). Tomorrow, I will post up the Top-10 with brief commentary.  I will also be posting questions with individual voters regarding some of their favorite movies over the coming days.

If you like it the Project, pass along the link.  If not, let me know…that’s what the comment section is for.

Methodology

Each voter was asked to list his or her top-50 movies in order of preference.  The voter’s favorite movie was awarded 30 points, second favorite 29 and so on down to number 25.  Films 26-30 were each awarded 5 points, 31-35 were awarded 4 points, etc. in blocks of 5.
